Temperance

“WHY DON’T YOU PUT this stuff on your face again?” Georgia squints as she brushes eye shadow over my eyelids.

I struggle to keep the one eye closed while the open one scrutinizes what she’s doing in the mirror ahead.

The pink glittery dress she has on almost blinds me. The tiara on her head is slipping off, hanging in the curls I’d already put in her hair with a hot iron. And the pink lipstick on her lips has smudged its way to her chin, staining her skin.

She looks cute nonetheless.

Like a princess.

My eyes rake over all the cosmetics on the vanity—some which have the label of Chanel and Lancôme. Picking up one of the new lipsticks and examining the plastic wrap it had just come out of, I almost choke at the price tag of forty-seven dollars stuck to the bottom of it.

Who pays this much money for makeup!

I place it back down as if it’s gold, not wanting to damage it or even touch it.

I have Opal to thank for all this junk she’s given Georgia as a gift, along with the dress and the tiara. Opal told Georgia to consider it an early birthday present since soon she’d be turning eight years old.

“Be My Baby” by The Ronettes sounds from the iPod dock on the nightstand.

Georgia is still painting my face. Now, she’s on to mascara and blush.

“You look so pretty, Temperance.”

“Thank you.” I pull her against me and press a kiss to her sweet spot.

She slants her head to the side and places all her tools down. She reaches out and winds a long lock of my hair around her finger, making a makeshift curl. She pins it into place and gets to work on all the other sections.

The brush she’s using practically rips out my strands, but I don’t complain, only wince and smile, loving that she’s so interested in this beauty regime considering how late it is at night.

We should be in bed.

Another tug and a yank at my scalp.

Georgia shoves her hand in front of my face.

My eyes flash with embarrassment as I take the piece of hay from between her fingers.

Georgia’s face is scrunched. “There’s so much of it, Temperance.” She plucks more out. “There’s a lot of it.” She pulls each piece out and places it on the vanity meticulously, lining them up. She hums along to the music for a little while.

I’m growing tired and I know she is too. As soon as we made it back home, we placed a quick phone call to Grams to check in on her. Georgia had told her about all the new people we’d met since we’d made it here. I told her I’d gotten a job. She told me about everything going on at the farm. There wasn’t anything new, she’d told me, just the same old same old.

Georgia positions my head with her hands, forcing me to face my reflection in the mirror. She spritzes perfume on my neck. I choke a bit but then when the mist subsides, I decide I like the subtle scent.
